Der Roman beschreibt in der Form einer Ich-Erzählung das Leben von Moll Flanders, einer fiktiven Figur, in der sich aber Teile von realen Persönlichkeiten (unter anderem der des Autors) wiederfinden. Moll Flanders wächst als Waisenkind auf und wird mit ihrer klugen, aber auch naiven Art zu einem beliebten Kind bei einigen wohlhabenden Familien. Als sie für das Waisenhaus zu alt wird, nimmt sie eine dieser Familien auf. Nach einigen Jahren verliebt sie sich in den ältesten Sohn der Familie, der jedoch seine Liebe zu ihr nicht öffentlich machen kann, weil es nicht angemessen für ihn wäre, ein Hausmädchen zu heiraten. Die Erkenntnis, dass sie wie eine Hure behandelt und benutzt wurde, ist für Moll ein harter Schlag. Der jüngere Bruder dagegen steht zu seiner Liebe zu Moll und heiratet sie schließlich . Nach einigen Jahren stirbt Molls Ehemann plötzlich und sie ist alleine. Um finanziell abgesichert zu sein, ist es für Moll allerdings notwendig, wieder einen Mann zu finden. Unter Obhut der Hebamme beginnt Moll ein erfolgreiches Leben als Diebin und Prostituierte. Obwohl sie nach einiger Zeit längst genug Geld hat, kann sie mit dem Stehlen nicht aufhören. Eines Tages wird sie schließlich gefasst, in das Newgate gebracht und zum Tode verurteilt. In mehreren Gesprächen wird Moll von einem Geistlichen, zur Abkehr von ihren Sünden bewogen. Aufgrund ihrer Reue wird die Strafe abgemildert und sie soll in die Neue Welt deportiert werden. Im Gefängnis trifft sie ihren früheren (Lancashire-)Ehemann wieder, der sich ihr gegenüber als reich ausgegeben hatte. Nachdem Moll ihn in langen Gesprächen überredet hat, sie zu begleiten, werden beide gemeinsam nach Amerika deportiert und kaufen sich von dem Geld, das Moll in ihrer Zeit als Kriminelle "erworben" hat, eine Plantage mit Sklaven. In Amerika tritt Moll außerdem noch das Erbe ihrer Mutter an. Im hohen Alter kehren Moll und ihr Mann wohlhabend nach London zurück. Übersetzt nach der französischen Ausgabe.

Es liegt wohl an der Grausigkeit des Stoffes, dass das Die Pest zu London (Journal of the Grand Plague of London. – London 1723), von Defoe lange nicht übersetzt wurde und erst 1925 in der deutschen Fassung erschien. Wer es mit seinen, bis in die kleinsten und unbedeutendsten Einzelheiten gehenden Schilderungen durchgelesen hat, dürfte einigermaßen erstaunt sein, zu hören, dass es von einem 61jährigen Manne geschrieben wurde, der zurzeit der großen Pest erst vier Jahre alt war, und daher aus eigener Anschauung nichts und vom Hörensagen kaum allzu viel über jenes Ereignis wissen konnte. Auch mit gründlichen Quellenstudien hat Defoe sich sicherlich nicht abgegeben. Das geht einmal aus der ungemeinen Flüchtigkeit bei der Abfassung des Werkes hervor. Dass trotzdem in dem "Pestbuche" ein Werk entstehen konnte, das trotz Robinson von vielen für die beste Arbeit Defoes gehalten wird und selbst wohlunterrichtete Männer der Wissenschaft dazu verführte, in ihm eine historische Quelle für die damaligen Zustände zu sehen, erklärt sich aus der besonderen Natur von Defoes Schaffensweise. Er besaß, neben einer erstaunlichen Fruchtbarkeit, im allerhöchsten Maße die Gabe, die man "Wirklichkeitsphantasie" nennen könnte, d. h. die Fähigkeit, sich in eine erdichtete und bloß vorgestellte Umwelt ganz und gar hineinzuversetzen und so völlig in ihr aufzugehen, als ob er tatsächlich darin zu leben und sich ihr anzupassen hätte.

Moll Flanders wächst als Waisenkind auf und wird mit ihrer klugen aber auch naiven Art zu einem beliebten Kind bei einigen wohlhabenden Familien. Die Erkenntnis, dass sie wie eine Hure behandelt und benutzt wurde, ist für Moll ein harter Schlag. Der jüngere Bruder dagegen steht zu seiner Liebe zu Moll und heiratet sie schließlich, nachdem der ältere Bruder sie dazu überredet. Nach einigen Jahren stirbt Molls Ehemann plötzlich und sie ist alleine. Um finanziell abgesichert zu sein, ist es für Moll allerdings notwendig, wieder einen Mann zu finden. Bob Singleton wird infolge einer Meuterei auf Madagaskar gemeinsam mit anderen Meuterern ausgesetzt. Mit einem Boot erreicht er das Festland. Danach durchquert er Afrika. Zunächst macht er sein Glück, erreicht die afrikanische Westküste und kehrt mit Reichtümern beladen nach England zurück. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) war ein englischer Schriftsteller in der Frühzeit der Aufklärung, der durch seinen Roman Robinson Crusoe weltberühmt wurde. Defoe gilt damit als einer der Begründer des englischen Romans.

Este ebook presenta "Las Aventuras de Robinson Crusoe", con un indice dinámico y detallado. Se trata de la obra más famosa de Daniel Defoe, publicada en 1719 y considerada la primera novela inglesa. Se trata de una autobiografía ficticia del protagonista, un náufrago inglés que pasa 28 años en una remota isla tropical. Probablemente la historia tuvo como inspiración hechos reales ocurridos a Pedro Serrano y Alexander Selkirk, a partir de donde construiría, con una trama sencilla y auténtica, un símbolo del colonialismo, del hombre perfecto y de la moral suprema. Robinsón Crusoe se enmarca en la literatura del siglo XVIII, marcada por la Ilustración y el movimiento romántico, que se caracteriza por su entrega a la imaginación y la subjetividad, su libertad de expresión y su idealización de la naturaleza. La novela incluye características de ambos movimientos y también elementos que estarían presentes en la propia vida de Daniel Defoe, como el sentimiento religioso y la pasión por los viajes. Este amor a la aventura tiene gran presencia en la novela, y se muestra como, a pesar de las penalidades que sufre en la isla, el regreso de Crusoe a Inglaterra es anticlimático, y desea volver a su vida de aventuras. Uno de los temas principales de la novela es la superación de la adversidad y es ascenso del protagonista al gobierno de su entorno. Robinson Crusoe llega a la isla sin nada y acaba dominando tanto a la naturaleza como a los animales. Cuando aparece Viernes ya se considera el "rey" de la isla, y a pesar del afecto que siente por éste, su relación es de señor y lacayo. Hay varios temas en la obra que resultan chocantes para la sensibilidad contemporánea, como son su patente aceptación del racismo, el esclavismo y el colonialismo cultural, circunstancias consideradas normales por la sociedad inglesa de la época.
